Spread Eagle was on the C&NW main line between Iron Mountain and Watersmeet. It was located at milepost 35.5 and was adjacent to Spread Eagle Lake.
The railroad had a 2,613' passing siding here as well as a spur track. They also had a shelter shed depot and a telegraph office.
This was Section 5 of T39N-R19E in Commonwealth Township.
1908. August 27. There was a rear-end collision between two ore trains on the C&NW road just west of Spread Eagle siding last Saturday night, resulting in a property lo0ss of over $30,000. It appears that three ore trains coming east were in the block at the same time running on a caution card. The first one reached the Antoine yard all right, but the second one broke in-two west of Spread Eagle.
The third train following ran into the rear end, telescoped the caboose and ditched seventeen cars of the train in front, and 25 cars on the following train completely wrecking the engine and landing it on top of a pile of ore and wreckage thirty feet high. The train men all escaped without injury. The track was blocked for 24 hours, necessitating the transfer of passengers. [IMP-1908-0827]
