Dunning, also known as Dunningville, was founded in 1855 as a sawmill location. The Chicago & West Michigan (later PM/C&O) shortened the name to Dunning. The village was located on the C&WM branch line from Holland southeast to Allegan. Dunning was about half way between both towns.
