Mining in the valley south of Ironwood caused a caving area which was several miles long. Over time, there were a dozen mines along this corridor and some had as many as a dozen mine shafts, removing iron ore. Eventually, the ground caved in along the corridor. This resulted in moving railroad tracks, as is shown in the attached photo.
