Time Line

1905. Forest fires started at the Wylie Buell Lumber Co. camps along the Haakwood branch of the MC have continued with unabated fury for nearly thirty-six hours. The loss will be considerable. [DFP-1905-0525]

1909. May 12. While trying to board the way car of the log train on the Haakwood branch three miles north of Wolverine, John King fell and his left leg slipped under the wheels, crushing it so badly that it had to be amputated above the knee. [SCH-1909-0513]

1911. July 12. On the Haakwood branch of the MC, there are vast tracts of timber, owned by the Buell-Wylie Company; the Buell Lumber Co. and other big lumber operators and these are said to be doomed to forest fires. [FLJ-1911-0712]

1911. July 12. A logging train in tonight at Wolverine from the Haakwood branch of the MC railroad brings a report that the forest fires are gaining headway rapidly. The train had just crossed a burning bridge when the structure fell. Another logging train coming in on the same road is on the forest side of the burned bridge and fears are entertained for the safety of the crew. On the Pigeon river branch of the MC, another logging crew is reported cut off by burned bridges. [EDP-1911-0713]

1916. April. A timber tract of virgin timber is to be opened this spring located in the south end of Cheboygan county and will be reached by a 2-mile extension of the MC Haakwood branch. It is covered with hardwood and hemlock which has never been touched by an axe. This tract is owned and will be operated by Kneeland, Luden & Bigelow of Bay City. [FLJ-1916-0415]

1924. A broken rail on the Haakwood branch near Wolverine caused the engine of a logging train to leave the rails and turn over twice. Much track was torn up but no one received severe injuries. Had it not been that the train was running slowly loss of life might have resulted. [GRP-1924-0119]

1936. June 8. The MC and NYC railroads applied to the ICC for permission to abandon the Haakwood branch of the former road in Cheboygan county. The carriers said the branch, 12.75 miles near Afton, MI was constructed to take out timber and that this had been completed. [LSJ-1936-0608]

1936. August. The ICC authorizes the NYC/MC to abandon the Haakwood Branch from Haakwood to Afton. [JCP-1936-0812]

1937. June. A crew of men is engaged taking up the abandoned Haakwood branch of the MC railroad. [BCT-1937-0616]
