Location: Onekama Junction, MI

Onekama Junction was a location on the Manistee & Northeastern railroad about eight miles northeast of Manistee. At this point, the railroad had a branch line running north to Onekama and Portage Lake.

Time Line

1890. The M&NE has built a depot at Onekama Junction. [DFP-1890-1231]

1891. On the Manistee & Northeastern rod, at a point five mile north of Manistee, a logging train ran into another logging train as one was coming from a spur to the main line. Conductor Frank Peterson was severely bruised about the hips and was taken to Mercy Hospital. By reason of this accident the passenger train was delayed one hour. [DFP-1891-0523]

1900. About 6 o'clock this evening the freight train on the M&NE railroad, coming from the north, was badly wrecked between Onekama Junction and Camp Two, about seven miles from here (Manistee). The wreck was caused by the breaking of a flange on one of the cars. Eleven cars were totally demolished and the track was torn up for nearly half of a mile. A hobo who was stealing a ride was seriously injured, and was taken to Mercy hospital in Manistee. [DFP-1900-1020]
