Location: Deep River, MI

Deep River was located on the Michigan Central's Mackinaw Branch, 2.5 miles northwest of Standish in 1897. The railroad had a 1,200' passing siding here in 1897. Named after Deep River in Connecticut. [DFP-1873-0917]

Time Line

1873. The town has a large sawmill which cuts an average of  30,000 feet per day. There is also a large hotel, store, blacksmith shop and about 25 residences. The store of kept by George Childs & Co., and in it can be found everything necessary, either in groceries, dry goods, hardware, boots an shotes, etc. 

The operation of sawing logs, and especially of raising them to the second floor of the mill, where they are sawed. On this floor is a large wide belt running over a pully above and down through the floor. It is used for raising the logs from the water below.
