Time Line

1910. Two dejected young men appeared in police court in Jackson this morning and meekly accepted a jail sentence of 25 days in lieu of payment of $10 fines. At the same time the convivial gang which has been making frequent trips to the Leslie oasis made a discovery. They went to Leslie yesterday and loaded up with assorted liquors. They boarded a Jackson interurban car and when the conductor endeavored to collect their fares they refused to pay and manifested a disposition to run the car. The conductor gave the "high sign" to Motorman Dutton, who relinquished his post to the conductor and displayed a deputy sheriff's badge to the bold young men. Then he dug down in his pocket, produced a pair of handcuffs, hitched them together in approved style and on the arrival of the car in Jackson, handed them over to the police. The Michigan United has had one member of each train crew on the Lansing division sworn in as a deputy sheriff to meet such exigencies of traffic between the wet and dry county. [DFP-1910-0105]
